Evaluation of Editing Development Across Course

Efficiency  When first starting the course I found that I was quite bad at scheduling in editing and leaving enough time to complete all the tasks to a standard which I found acceptable to myself. To combat this issue I started creating Gannt charts to schedule entire projects in advance so that I had a visual representation of how much time I had to complete each individual task, one problem which I had with my schedules was that I gave myself too much time to plan the project and not enough time to edit the footage together, I would finish all the productions on time however, some times I felt as though it felt too rushed, some parts of the sequences you could tell had more effort and care put into them compared to other sequences which I had less time to focus on.  Organisation  I feel like if I was more organised I could've produced a greater volume of work to a better standard, I made sure when editing I was keeping all my footage in the same folder and then organisi...

Editing My Music Video Together

Throughout the editing process of the music video I have kept a log detailing the different editing techniques I have implemented throughout the music video. This log references what I have done and where, why I have used the specific editing technique, what issues I found whilst editing the footage together and finally how I believed I could have improved upon.  Jump Cut When the lyrics "when you've had a few" plays a jump cut is used in which bottles appear to help illustrate the lyrics for the audience whilst adding some comedic effect by amplifying the idea of drinking by exaggerating how much alcohol the character has drank. I believe the jump cut works well here and links to Vernallis' theory on music videos in which she suggests conventionally jump cuts are used in videos as a short way of transferring information to the audience in a fashion which is both engaging and clear.  Cutting With The Lyrics Throughout the video I have made sure the frames in the vide...

Tutorial of VHS Style Editing Used in Music Video

For my music video I have used editing to create a VHS style filter to the music video. Here I have posted a tutorial on how to create this homestyle VHS footage look using Premier Pro. I believe for this edit to be improved I could have added a font in the corner showing a date and time in which the film was recorded to make it look more true to VHS camcorder footage layout.

Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut: Functions and Meanings of Music Video Editing

Introduction Carol Vernallis is a theorist who's work "The Kindest Cut" explores the difference in editing style used in film and music video production. The theorist mentions continuity, editing, meaning, sound and visuals and their relationship. The four main categories the theorist looks into include camera (positioning, movement and framing), editing, narrative and Diegesis (the world created in a music video). Narrative Vernallis suggests in her article (C., Vernallis, 2011) that a music video is a visual response to the music. She also suggests there is not necessarily a balance between performance and narrative. The theorist suggests the narrative in music video can sometimes remain incomplete, the narrative is partial or fragmented this could be primarily because of the time constraints in a music video. Vernallis suggests the structure of a music video can seem disjointed, as in music videos they usually do not contain much continuity this can make the piece seem...

My Film

What is my Film About? Summary of Movie Concept My film will be based upon Laura Mulvey's theory on the presence of a male gaze in cinema. I want to depict the sexualisation and pressure put onto females to conform with traditional gender roles. Mulvey's theory suggests that females audiences are passive, they gain no pleasure from looking at the sexualised females however, they compare themselves to the "ideal" women from a male point of view. In this film I want to reflect the build up of pressure caused from trying to become this mainstream idealism of what beauty is. Mulvey suggests that the use of fragmentation of the body, slow shots and close ups of erotic areas such as the lips and eyes are used in order to satisfy the scopophilic view of the male audience. I intend to shoot close ups taking off and putting on clothes in order to show the unnecessary sexualisation of the female body within the film industry. I believe that lighting has a strong effect on the a...

4 Hour Film Challenge - Obsession

What is the Task? The task at hand is to produce a production based on Jacques Lacan's theory of lack and desire within a 4 hour timeframe.  What do I Want to Produce? I am going to produce an interview style production talking to the Alexa speaker. I am staging the interview with a speaker as I believe this will help me reflect the obsessive nature behind Lacan's theory, the idea of someone talking to a speaker is quite insane however, it reflects them going mental due to their fixation on a desire to fulfil endless goals which don't make you feel happier. My character in this production is going to be a very modern feminine character that is very fixated on their appearance. All over social media in recent years the idea of "miracle" products are sold to a mainly female audience to supposedly help with weight loss. A lot of them are drinks a majority of which are teas, I intend to add a comical spin to this idea, instead of advertising the weight lost from ...

4 Hour Film Challenge - Freud

What is the Task? The task at hand is to create a film in four hours which links to Sigmund Freud's theory on the Id, Ego and Superego. The film should show the difference in the three different forms of consciousness through the use of one character to show that all three are present in each person. What I Want to Produce? As I will be shooting at college I am going to show a reflection of the Id, Ego and Superego in a college student. I will try make it as relatable to college life as possible however, the video will very short therefore, I will only have a short timeframe to convey the idea that it is set at college. The use of props and outfit will be used to suggests that it is a student for example, the student will be wearing a college ID lanyard around their neck. Many teenagers at college are smokers therefore, the student may mention smoking in some form to link to being an average rebellious teen, the idea of an average teen links to the ego, the have some form of morali...

My New Wave Film

What is My Contextual Film Production Idea? In my film I want to reflect how Covid19 has affected the younger generation of the UK. I will use the Prime Ministers speech audio throughout the video, I will cut the audio and only use the most important influential parts in order to create a tense atmosphere. The use of a non-diegetic soundtrack will be used on the video, this will make the film seem more like a montage showing the events of the lockdown. The soundtrack will be slow paced and quite sad in order to show the respect for the severity of the situation. Mainly my footage will be shot inside to reflect lockdown and the idea of isolation from everyone. Later I will introduce footage shot in my friends house to reflect the mixing of households which was allowed in the summer season. I have shot a lot of footage in rural locations to show that in the lockdown many people were exercising and going outside more as it was one of the only things you was allowed to do at the start. I w...

Rule of Six Theory

The rule of six is a theory discussed by Walter Murch in his book 'In the blink of an eye: A perspective on film editing'. There are six factors which he believes help to tell a story using editing. The theorist suggest "a list of priorities. If you have to give up something, don't ever give up emotion before story. Don't give up story before rhythm, don't give up rhythm before eye-trace, don't give up eye-trace before planarity, and don't give up planarity before spacial continuity." (Murch). The editor believes there is a hierarchy in which you should use the rule of six in order to create an edit which will have the best effect on the audience. Emotion (51%) Emotion is a very important part of editing, it is important that you are able to reflect the tone of the scene or movie onto the audience. They must feel a connection with the actors in order to understand what they are going through in the movie (Renee). A good example of use of emotion is...
