Do I Wanna Know - Arctic Monkeys - Pitch

Why did I Chose my Song?

I have chosen to produce a video for Arctic Monkeys song "Do I Wanna Know". I have chosen this song as the lyrics to the song are very visual and easy to understand. The song seems like it will not be too challenging to make a video for it as the song is quite visual therefore it will make it easy to illustrate the lyrics within the production. The pace of the song isn't too fast that it would make it hard to cut footage to the beat of the song and it also is a song which I feel I could listen to on repeat for a while whilst editing footage together to create my final result.

What are the Conventions of the Genre?

The artists create alternative/indie songs which conventionally have elements of live performance and narrative based videos. Many indie songs generally feature live performances within the video this is because up and coming alternative artists want the audience to focus more on the actual music and the talent the artists posses. a modern twist is usually put on the music video nowadays, in order to break up live performances the artists may add narrative storylines in between in order to break up the video and to give the audience a story to focus on. The use of narrative based videos is used within all genres as it gives a lot of room for creativity, using narrative based videos you can film anything you want as long as it is in relation to the song in some form (lyrics, beat, etc.). Within indie videos the mise en scene plays a big role, conventionally indie videos look quite retro, the choice of costume and props has a big effect on the look of the video, for an indie rock video, the males in the production generally should be wearing fairly monotoned clothing (black jeans, leather jacket, vintage sneakers or doc martens), the females within the production are in this case will be the victims of scopophilia, the song is talking about them in a way which portrays them enticing/intriguing therefore the females will be wearing suggestive clothing (short skirts/dresses, clothing generally will be red and black as this connotes the idea of sex). It is conventional that the camera will be looking at them in a way that accentuates their beauty (close ups of lips, eyes, chest and bottom and fragmenting shots following the woman as she walks from behind). A big convention of indie music mise en scene is for the artists especially to have tattoos featured across their body. Generally as the artist is singing within the video the use of close ups on their face will be used to show their emotion as they are singing, there will also be close ups of the instruments playing in order to further focus on the talent of the artists. The use of long shots are primarily used to show the audience the setting of the video and to show the audience the artists and their outfit, many artists are viewed as style icons therefore, it is crucial to capture shots of their full attire.

Analysis of the Lyrics

Verse 1
Have you got colour in your cheeks? - Blushing suggest she is embarrassed or sexual excited (Could use close up of cheeks here)
Do you ever get that fear that you can't shift the type
That sticks around like summat in your teeth? - Here they suggest form of paranoia, he is worried he is like the unwanted food stuck in your teeth (Could use close up of teeth)
Are there some aces up your sleeve?
Have you no idea that you're in deep? - he believes the girl is hiding something for him, she is hiding her feelings, he doesn't know if she likes him, giving her the upper hand. (Could use close up of mountain of aces falling out of sleeve)
I've dreamt about you nearly every night this week
How many secrets can you keep? - Artist manifests lover in his dreams showing his desire to be with her, he wishes his lover would not keep secrets and tell him how she feels (Here we could zoom into mans eye, place a faded image of lady in all white with white background).
'Cause there's this tune I found
That makes me think of you somehow an' I play it on repeat - Memories are triggered by sounds, imagery and scents, the fact he plays in on repeat suggests he likes obsessively thinking about her (Could put a reflection of replay symbol in his iris' to show his infatuation)
Until I fall asleep, spillin' drinks on my settee - (Could use an panning shot which starts at males face sleeping and then slowly moves down to reveal alcohol in limp hand with photos scattered across room).
Pre Chorus
Do I wanna know? If this feelin' flows both ways? - Character seems anxious, he doesn't believe female cares for him (Here we may see the male becoming more frustrated and creepy)
Sad to see you go, was sorta hopin' that you'd stay - (Use tracking shot of woman's behind walking into distance, image slowly becomes more blurred as she leaves).
Baby, we both know that the nights were mainly made
For sayin' things that you can't say tomorrow day - Artist is suggesting they are more likely to be honest with each other whilst drunk, this can also be seen in a way which suggests artist is taking advantage of the drunk lady. (In this scene we see both characters together for the first time, male seems quite forceful, he really wants to talk to her at this point).
Chorus
Crawlin' back to you - Suggests he is desperate and vulnerable (Under exposed shot of hands pulling him forward across pavement, everything but hands is blackness).
Ever thought of callin'
When you had a few? - (Close up of girls phone ringing, she picks it up, in next shot we see her ending the call and putting her phone away).
Cause I always do - (Mid shot of male seeing her hang up, takes another shot, as he puts it down use close up of shot glass on table).
Maybe I'm too
Busy being yours
To fall for somebody new - This reflects the obsessive nature, he knows he should find a new lover put choose not to. (Show male flicking through past photos, drinking).
Now, I've thought it through - (Close up on his thoughtful face, he finds his revelation, takes shot, close up of shot glass hitting table, long shot of male walking out).
Crawlin' back to you - (Males hands crawling in darkness).
Verse 2
So have you got the guts? - Here he uses reverse psychology, by daring her to show him she's brave enough to be with him further reinforcing obsessive, forceful nature of male. (Mid shot of man pulling her towards him and miming lyrics).
Been wonderin' if your heart's still open
And if so, I wanna know what time it shut - He compares her to to some sort of store which opens and closes for him, the fact he asks what time does it shut suggests he wants to know so he can save himself from further heartbreak. (Shot of shop sign could be used here which says it is closed until further notice, as he looks at sign she pushes him away and turns away)
Simmer down and pucker up, I'm sorry to interrupt
It's just I'm constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you - He uses commanding language to force her to kiss him here (Mid shot of man tapping her on shoulder, close up of him grabbing her waist, pan up to couple mere centimetres away from each others lips).
I don't know if you feel the same way I do
But we could be together if you wanted to - Here he finally gives the female a choice (mid shot of couple talking, girl leads him on instead of answering).

What do I Want to Shoot?

I want to shoot a narrative based videos, the song has many opportunities to shoot footage which illustrates the lyrics and there is also opportunity to shoot footage which amplifies the messages behind the lyrics. The main idea behind the video is to reflect the obsessive way a man follows a woman he likes. I have been influenced by Bruno Mars' song "Locked out of Heaven", the VHS tape look is very creative and I believe it could work quite well in this production, the use of the VHS style footage could suggest to an audience that a male can be strongly influenced by the media, he views women in a scopophilic way just like the media would see a woman in film. The video will start off with a male watching VHS-like footage of films with strong themes of obsession with a woman, as he keeps flicking through the footage it is as though he is absorbed into it, his life turns into a scopophilic movie. The video will put the male in the position of the camera we see everything he sees through the camera. The camera will be using methods such as taking close ups of ladies lips, eyes etc. and it will also track her movements from behind so it seems sort of creepy an obsessive. There are some lyrics which suggest the artist sees the women in his dreams, to illustrate this the camera could zoom into his eye in which we see a fade image of the girl dressed in very innocent colours (whites with white background) to put her on a pedestal and make her look like someone a man idolizes.

Scheduling

Gannt Chart  I have created a Gannt chart in order to plan out my the production/planning/editing/evaluating of the production. I have made sure to space everything out and give myself realistic timescales to finish each and every task. The tasks have been split into different sections in order to keep it organised and to show a better visual representation of which tasks should be started first. The first section is planning, I have put this first as you must plan a video before you can produce it, the planning section contains all the tasks which I believe relate to planning for example, analysing music videos, researching music videos theories, analysing the song I want to produce and create all relevant documents such as storyboards. The next section is productions, the sections contains all actions I must take in relation to shooting the video for example, finding equipment, actors and props needed, shooting the video, watching footage back and shooting more footage if necessary.

Editing My Music Video Together

Throughout the editing process of the music video I have kept a log detailing the different editing techniques I have implemented throughout the music video. This log references what I have done and where, why I have used the specific editing technique, what issues I found whilst editing the footage together and finally how I believed I could have improved upon.  Jump Cut When the lyrics "when you've had a few" plays a jump cut is used in which bottles appear to help illustrate the lyrics for the audience whilst adding some comedic effect by amplifying the idea of drinking by exaggerating how much alcohol the character has drank. I believe the jump cut works well here and links to Vernallis' theory on music videos in which she suggests conventionally jump cuts are used in videos as a short way of transferring information to the audience in a fashion which is both engaging and clear.  Cutting With The Lyrics Throughout the video I have made sure the frames in the vide
