Throughout this year I believe I have been able to learn a variety of practical skills which will benefit me when working in a professional environment. I have been able to evidence communication with my clients, completing health and safety protocols, setting up lighting and camera equipment to a standard acceptable to a client, completing promotional work to a standard acceptable to a client, completed all pre-production and idea generating work to a standard acceptable to a client and I have also justified my design methods across all the units I have undertaken.
Communicating with Client
When completing units which involve completing work for a client I made sure to deal with the unit in a professional manner as if I was working in a professional environment. For example when completing my promotional video, I made sure to set up a video call every Friday in which I would show the client all the work I had produced so far each week, within that call I would gather feedback from the client and later, when evidencing the meeting on my blog I would write a summary of what went on in the meeting, the feedback the client has given me and the measures I was going to put in place in response to the feedback. I believe that throughout my projects I have kept to a professional standard when dealing with clients and have evidenced how I used the clients feedback to improve upon my work. I believe one downfall I had when it comes to leasing with clients was that I sometimes became unorganised and would have to reschedule meetings, this then put my project behind schedule and presented me as unprofessional to the client. In the future I believe I need to try harder to sticking to meetings and deadlines in order to keep the project running smoothly and keeping the client happy with my work ethic.
Health and Safety Procedures
Within most projects I have been able to evidence my meticulous care when it comes to health and safety procedures involved in moving image production. I have evidenced creating many risk assessments before shooting on location, I believe that one way I could improve my risk assessments is by providing some evidence that I actually put in place the measures which I spoke about in the risk assessments. For example, when shooting in the studio I suggested that a potential risk was that if people bring food and drinks into the studio this could get onto equipment and cause electrocutions therefore, a measure I put in place to stop this was printing off signs which suggests food and drink is prohibited in the studio, this is a great action to take however, I believe I should have taken more pictures of the signs being put up in order to evidence that I took action on my risk assessment. As well as completing risk assessments I have also took into account many other legal documents which a production company may need to consider before filming, for example, when creating a pre-production portfolio for the Promotional Video Unit I suggested that before shooting I must first get an public and employee liability insurance so that if any damage was cause to a member of staff or a member of the public then the insurance could cover it so that the production could continue running smoothly. In order to create a more professional portfolio I could have done some research into some insurance companies and evidenced this research on my blog and later evaluated which would be the best insurance policy for my own personal production.
Setting up Equipment
Throughout the course I have developed my knowledge of practical skills needed in Creative Media Production. I have been able to develop my knowledge of camera operation, this includes learning how to use the technical settings on a camera when operating in manual mode in relation to moving image and I have also developed my knowledge of camera and lighting setups, safety precautions to take in studio or when shooting on any production site, and I have also evidenced my knowledge of different shot types, angles and techniques. I feel over the course of this year I have been able to demonstrate a sound understanding of how to set up equipment in order to create desired shot. When evidencing my knowledge of all technical settings on my blog I created posts going into detail about aperture, shutter speed and ISO used in moving image, in order to show that I understood the results in changes to these settings I posted split screen videos in which I altered my camera settings to show the changes seen in the image. I believe what I could've improved upon was when creating videos demonstrating changes in aperture, I could've shown in which scenarios each aperture setting would work best (for example low aperture for subjects closer or high aperture for shooting establishing shots) rather than taking the exact same shot with 3 different aperture settings. I did a great amount of work into different camera and lighting setups used in both photography and film, I analysed when each technique is used, I wrote about how you could create each specific technique and I also showed examples of different lighting and camera setups we have used for example I recorded examples of butterfly lighting, split lighting and Rembrandt lighting. A way in which I think I could've fixed this section is by taking pictures of the exact lighting and camera setups I personally used to achieve each shot. As well as researching different equipment setups, I also researched the effects that different lenses created, I researched wide angle, macro, telephoto and zoom lenses and I wrote about what situations each lens is used in. To demonstrate the effect of each lens I took an image of the same subject which a variety of different lenses and noted down the size of the lens (in millimetres). I believe a way I could have improve my footage would be by shooting examples of when you would use each individual lens (for example - using telephoto for nature photography). Overall, I believe that I did a lot of meticulous research into setting up lighting and camera equipment, the main area in which I needed improvement was shooting more footage of when you would use each individual technical setting or lens or lighting/camera setup.
Completing Promotional Video Unit
Overall, I believe I have made an exciting product which has been meticulously planned and engage and inform the target audience Fruit Bowl Tech wants to market to. I was able to perform both primary and secondary research on my specific audience in order to create a promotional video which they would enjoy and would in turn push them to try out the next social media platform. My researched helped me find out what sort of video the audience would want to see and it also helped me choose which platforms it is best to release the production on in order to reach the largest portion of the demographic/psychographics. I made sure the production had a general theme of family in order to reach an audience that is either starting a family or already has one. I believe in order to improve the production I should have done more research into the psychographics of my audience base, although I did take the psychographics into account (for example, filming on a scenic beach to reach explorers and using CGI to show the man using the social media platform to reach mainstreamers) I believe I didn't focus enough on the "aspirational" viewers. I believe I have met their needs in some form as many peoples aspiration is to be able to start a family like their own parents did, this video is a representation of that exact message. Overall, I was able to create a very detailed plan, I know exactly what equipment I want and where I can purchase it, I know what specific props I need and I have planned on ways to make them copyright friendly and overall I made sure to plan everything as well as I could. Throughout the planning process I was able to keep in touch with the client and document the feedback they had given me to improve the product, I then used the feedback I was given to create a project which the client was happy with. When a meeting with the client was missed once, I made sure to rearrange the meeting to make sure I was keeping them up to date on any improvements made to the project so that I could acquire as much feedback as possible so that I could make amendments to the product in a timely fashion. I believe one thing which made my production planning great was that I made sure to split everything off into different sections using blog post in order to make everything well organised. I believe a well organised project is always a lot better planned and this can be seen through my work, before I even began planning anything I made sure to create pages and headings for every single aspect I believed was important to mention which made it easier to the complete a Gantt chart and also complete all the work as I knew in advance what needed to be considered. Finally, the legal and ethical considerations for the production were completed at a great quality as mentioned above, the only change that I would have liked to make to this section is to add a bit about regulatory bodies for advertisements to make sure the advert meets all the requirements to be broadcasted online. In conclusion, my production was successful, I was able to manage a high workload in a short amount of time, I was able to document and evidence changes made to the work and then evaluate why changes were made, I was very organised throughout, I kept in constant contact with the client , making sure that all their needs were met and finally I planned a production which would engage, inform and convince an audience base to use Fruit Bowl Tech's new product AncesTree.
Justifying all Decisions Made Across Units
I believe that justifying my decisions has been shown throughout my blog, whenever I am creating a video first, I state what the idea for the video is, and I explain why I am going to create that specific video, next I create equipment lists, here I make sure to justify why I am using each individual piece of equipment and as well this I sometimes weigh up pros and cons to find which piece of equipment will work best for my production. I believe one are which I haven't justified my decisions as well in is when creating shot list, I believe after creating storyboards I should then suggest how I would go about shooting each individual shot (where to place camera, where to place lights) after stating how to achieve each shot I believe it would have been helpful to justify why I was using that setup and evaluate how well the process of shooting went. I believe if I had more evaluative justifications throughout my blog it would nurture development a bit more, as it forces me to constantly pick apart my work and find ways to improve upon it or even just celebrate where I have seen success. I found what made it very easy to justify everything was organising my projects meticulously, for each project I had a heading for each different section therefore, it made it easy to make justifications and evaluations for each individual section of my posts.
