Evaluation of Promotional Video Production

Scheduling

I was fairly meticulous with my planning, every Monday I updated my production schedule to show how much work has been produced in a week period. I have found that I had planned to do too many tasks at one single point that it became completely impossible to complete. I still managed to finish planning the production on schedule however, I made it very difficult for myself considering I had planned very few things to do in the last weeks and many things to do in the start. Many aspects of the production are intertwined therefore, it was very difficult to complete some areas without completing the others, I tried to take this into account in my production schedule, this is why there are some many things piled together. I believe what may have helped is if I had stuck to the production schedule more strictly at the start as this would have taken off a lot of pressure within the last couple weeks of the production planning. I believe the use of a Gantt chart was a great way of keeping track of my production and adding the featured which allowed me to track progress I had made in each field was also helpful as it made it clear to me how much I had actually finished.

Planning

Overall, I believe my pre-production planning was excellent, I was able to analyse all my different options within the production and then choose the best for the situation, as well as this I have been able to evaluate my process throughout to show where some aspects have gone brilliantly and where some other aspects required more attention. Before creating a plan for each aspect I wrote about why planning that aspect is important to the production, for example, before creating a storyboard I wrote a bit about who in the production benefits from the storyboard and what a storyboard tells you. As well as this I have tried to weigh up pros and cons where necessary to show my justification of choices for example when creating a location recce I weighed up the pros and cons of each locations and then created an evaluation to show what my final location choice was going to be. I have made sure to take into the unforeseen in many different aspect for example, by purchasing insurance I am making sure if anything does go wrong the production is not at risk, I have created a contingency plan which talks about what we should do if unforeseen circumstances come our way for example, I acquired permits for all three beaches even though I was only using one, I have done this so that if by any chance the chosen location is unavailable there are two other locations within an hour drive which are available for the production. In conclusion I believe the planning aspect of my production was very positive, I have researched every single aspect to make sure that I have thought about everything that is important in a production.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

My documentation of legal and ethical considerations is done to a outstanding quality. I have spoke about why it is important to take into consideration each aspect and what the production would be at risk of if I did not take into account all the legal and ethical considerations I have. Overall, I believe I have done a great job with my legal and ethical considerations as I have provided evidence of all the documents that are required (call sheets, release forms, location permits etc.). I believe one way my legal and ethical considerations could be improved is if I was to add a section analysing and researching the regulatory bodies of advertisements in order to find what is and isn't allowed to be shown within a promotional video. I have made sure that all the footage in the production all should meet the standards met by regulatory bodies in film production however, I believe writing about it would definitely improve the final product and provide evidence that I am confident that I understand all the rules and regulations.

Overall

Overall, I believe I have made an exciting product which has been meticulously planned and engage and inform the target audience Fruit Bowl Tech wants to market to. I was able to perform both primary and secondary research on my specific audience in order to create a promotional video which they would enjoy and would in turn push them to try out the next social media platform. My researched helped me find out what sort of video the audience would want to see and it also helped me choose which platforms it is best to release the production on in order to reach the largest portion of the demographic/psychographics. I made sure the production had a general theme of family in order to reach an audience that is either starting a family or already has one. I believe in order to improve the production I should have done more research into the psychographics of my audience base, although I did take the psychographics into account (for example, filming on a scenic beach to reach explorers and using CGI to show the man using the social media platform to reach mainstreamers) I believe I didn't focus enough on the "aspirational" viewers. I believe I have met their needs in some form as many peoples aspiration is to be able to start a family like their own parents did, this video is a representation of that exact message. Overall, I was able to create a very detailed plan, I know exactly what equipment I want and where I can purchase it, I know what specific props I need and I have planned on ways to make them copyright friendly and overall I made sure to plan everything as well as I could. Throughout the planning process I was able to keep in touch with the client and document the feedback they had given me to improve the product, I then used the feedback I was given to create a project which the client was happy with. When a meeting with the client was missed once, I made sure to rearrange the meeting to make sure I was keeping them up to date on any improvements made to the project so that I could acquire as much feedback as possible so that I could make amendments to the product in a timely fashion. I believe one thing which made my production planning great was that I made sure to split everything off into different sections using blog post in order to make everything well organised. I believe a well organised project is always a lot better planned and this can be seen through my work, before I even began planning anything I made sure to create pages and headings for every single aspect I believed was important to mention which made it easier to the complete a Gantt chart and also complete all the work as I knew in advance what needed to be considered. Finally, the legal and ethical considerations for the production were completed at a great quality as mentioned above, the only change that I would have liked to make to this section is to add a bit about regulatory bodies for advertisements to make sure the advert meets all the requirements to be broadcasted online. In conclusion, my production was successful, I was able to manage a high workload in a short amount of time, I was able to document and evidence changes made to the work and then evaluate why changes were made, I was very organised throughout, I kept in constant contact with the client , making sure that all their needs were met and finally I planned a production which would engage, inform and convince an audience base to use Fruit Bowl Tech's new product AncesTree.

Gannt Chart  I have created a Gannt chart in order to plan out my the production/planning/editing/evaluating of the production. I have made sure to space everything out and give myself realistic timescales to finish each and every task. The tasks have been split into different sections in order to keep it organised and to show a better visual representation of which tasks should be started first. The first section is planning, I have put this first as you must plan a video before you can produce it, the planning section contains all the tasks which I believe relate to planning for example, analysing music videos, researching music videos theories, analysing the song I want to produce and create all relevant documents such as storyboards. The next section is productions, the sections contains all actions I must take in relation to shooting the video for example, finding equipment, actors and props needed, shooting the video, watching footage back and shooting more footage if n...

Lighting Setups and Techniques

High Key Lighting  This is where there is a strong key light in the scene and the fill light is very intense causing softer shadows and less contrast. High Key lighting is used to create a very well lit scene usually with multiple light sources. This form of lighting is created when there are soft shadows and very little contrast therefore, the use of soft boxes and diffusers can help create a well lit scene which doesn't contain too many shadows. If the light source you used is very small this will create more contrast and shadows therefore, it is best to use large lights which will cover you entire scene. As well as being able to physically alter your lighting you can also change your brightness and contrast levels in post-production in order to make the shot exactly how you want it. High key lighting is used most commonly in commercials and interviews where you don't need shadows and contrast for dramatic effect (Adobe). It can also be used other situations for example in fi...

Andrew Goodwin - Dancing in the Distraction Factory

Introduction Andrew Goodwin's music video theory states that every music video consists of 8 key principals. all of which I will analyse individually using example music videos to evidence the truth in the theory. I have analysed Goodwin's book "Dancing In The Distraction Factory" in order to inform my own music video production process.  Links Between the Music and the Visuals In Goodwin's book "Dancing in the Distraction Factory" he theorises that there is a distinct link between the music and the visuals of a song. This is mainly in regards to the beat; if a song is very upbeat like "Locked Out Of Heaven" (Mars, B., 2012) the visuals will represent the upbeat nature of the song, this can be done by providing visuals of people dancing to indicate to the audience that it is an upbeat party anthem. The beat can similarly affect the editing style, when as song has a slow tempo such as "Take Me To Church" (Hozier, 2014) the cuts in the...
